God of War 3 review

Intro and Influential Information

Platform: PlayStation 3
Money Paid for Game: £40
When I got it: Day of release

Here it is, the final (chronologically) game in the GoW series. So many questions will be going through your mind if you’re a long running fan of the series and speaking as one, the answers you’ll find in this game do not disappoint.

Story / Characters

Right, well as with every game in this series, this section will be short. You once again take control of Kratos and the aim of the game this time is simply to kill Zeus, no matter who or what gets in your way. The story is what you’d come to expect from a GoW game, however this time around it does take a little longer than you’d like to really pick up the pace.

Ultimately, the biggest question on any fans mind will be does it wrap up everything up? The simple answer is yes, you will not be left wondering about anything once you have finished the game.

I really can’t say anything else without ruining it...

Presentation

Well never has this section been so pointless as for this game...

This is quite simply the best looking game ever created, period. There is the odd bit where clipping is off and some textures and materials don’t look as good as everything else but even they look better than 99% of what’s around. There are simply no words to describe how good this game looks and sounds.

The main thing the PS3 gave the developers the power to do was really bring their idea of greek mythology to life. The settings and locations look absolutely perfect and you can’t really imagine the game looking any other way.

As mentioned there are some bits that look better than others and vice versa, but that really is irrelevant.

Gameplay

This is exactly what I’ve come to expect from a series like GoW and that is completely untouched. The gameplay is exactly the same as in other entries, once again this isn’t bad because there wasn’t anything about GoW that really needed changing. The combo system is the same, your moves are pretty much the same and the enemies are just HD versions of their former selves.

That is the one area that really disappointed me, I gotta admit I was both hoping and expecting plenty of new enemies to tear up and it would be a stretch to call any enemy from GoW iconic so it’s a bit lazy. This doesn’t take away from the experience all that much, the new enemies that are present are really well designed and enjoyable to fight. The boss fights are easily the best parts of the game, and from a game where the quest is to basically kill a bunch of gods and deities, these get it just right.

Weapons are once again the same as before, you have your trusty blades of chaos and get more weapons as you progress through the game. For the first time though, one of the alternate weapons actually serves as a decent replacement for the trusty blades. The Cestus gauntlets can do everything the blades can and offer a new and interesting way to take on the enemies. This again is a little disappointing, it would have been great to have more than 2 weapons worth using. All of the weapons and items you gain can be upgraded by defeating enemies and using their souls to increase their power and moves list.

The only new mechanic present is the ability to grapple into foes both while on the ground and in mid-air. Kratos will impale them and just ram into them, this has a great sense of force and power behind it and is incredibly satisfying to do. Magic has also been slightly altered. This time around magic is assigned to a specific weapon, this is great improvement as now your weapons can all be changed in real time using the d-pad. This results in a surprisingly high amount of combo possibilities and when you throw the grapple system in there, the combat is far more fleshed out this time around.

Replay Value

There are 4 modes in GoW, and this (again) is the same kettle of fish as before. Normal is fun and challenging, hard is a steady ride if you have previous experience and very hard is the usual 4 hits and you’re dead run. Thankfully there is a bit more to the combat now due to some new attacks and patterns of certain enemies so the story mode will offer enough for numerous playthroughs.

The numerous collectables make a return this time also, but they don’t prove at all difficult to find. You also unlock an create your own fight mode where you can pick and choose what enemies you want to fight and what difficulty and the challenge of the gods makes a return.

All in all GoW3 doesn’t make any drastic changes, but the little changes that are here improve on one of the most entertaining series gaming has produced. There is no reason any PS3 owner shouldn’t play GoW3, in fact there is no reason any real gamer shouldn’t...
